Why We Love It

Organic cotton: Organic cotton has some major benefits over the regular stuff, especially when it comes to pesticides water, and carbon emissions. Organic cotton farmers use only organic-approved fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides from plants, animals and minerals, unlike the traditional stuff, which often relies on petroleum-based fertilizers, synthetic chemicals, and pesticides. These chemicals aren’t just toxic, they often get into waterways, polluting the area around them. Speaking of water, over 80% of the land used for organic cotton is rainfed. That’s a lot more effective than many conventional cotton fields which require more water due to ineffective irrigation systems. Lastly, you’ve got emissions, organic farming methods can also sequester more carbon in the soil, through practices like crop rotation and reduced tillage. Studies suggest that organic cotton production reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 94% compared to conventional cotton.

Impact

At a production rate of over 25 million tons a year, cotton is the second most widely produced fabric in the world and it has a huge environmental impact, especially when it’s not organic.

One reason is pesticides, non-organic cotton uses pesticides, like a lot. In fact, 4% of all world pesticides and 10% of insecticides are used in cotton-growing. It also uses a ton of water; we’re talking 1.5 swimming pools (3,644 cubic meters) per ton. But 80 per cent of the land used for organic cotton is rainfed, which is way more water efficient than most cotton irrigation systems. Lastly, you have emissions, organic cotton can produce ~94% less emissions that the non-organic kind. And at over 25 million tons each year, that makes a huge difference.

Sadly, nearly 95 percent of that global cotton production is GMO and/or conventionally grown. But by supporting companies that work with organic cotton you can help change that!
