Take A Sustainability Deep Dive
In the United States ~30-40 percent of the food supply, or ~80m tons of food, goes to waste each year That's pretty crazy, considering that Agriculture contributes ~10 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions! To make this matters worse, most of this food ends up in landfill and turns into methane - a gas 30x more potent than C02.
~43% of food waste comes from homes, which means it's thrown out after it reaches you (as opposed to by farmers, grocery stores, or restaurants)
That's a tough pill to swallow, but it's also great news, because eliminating that waste is in your control. And finding ways to keep your food fresh longer is a great way to do it!
But the most popular way to do it, plastic wrap, has its own issues. It doesn't recycle easily, and it doesn't biodegrade or compost at all. Also its often made of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which contains chlorine and uses vinyl chloride a known carcinogen its manufacturing process.
A family of four uses ~2000 sheets of plastic wrap a year. But they don't have to, reusable wraps and other containers are an easy switch!
