Traditional Toothcare can be a sustainability nightmare. Whether it's a plastic brush, a plastic tube, or just the excess water and gas that goes into making and shipping a lot of the pasty products, there are tons of pitfalls. Going for tablets, powder, or even a more sustainably made paste is a great way to avoid them.

Here are some things to consider before you brush:

Bamboo Toothbrushes: ~1 billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away each year in the U.S. alone, that's ~50M pounds of waste! Fortunately Biodegradable bamboo brushes are a great alternative. Bamboo grows quickly and requires A LOT fewer resources than plastic, it can even serve as a carbon sink. Just remember to properly dispose of the brush after its lifespan (typically 3 months) by composting it properly, which may mean finding a commercial facility.

Plant-Based Bristles: Nylon bristles are the most common bristles out there, even on a lot of bamboo toothbrushes. But they're derived from fossil fuels and contribute to microplastic pollution, shedding them as you brush. Plant-based bristles on the other hand, which are made from materials like castor beans or bamboo, offer a sustainable solution. They aren't petroleum based, require less energy to make, and biodegrade naturally after their lifespan, minimizing environmental impact.

Toothpaste Tablets and Powders: Over one billion toothpaste tubes are discarded in the US annually! Fortunately toothpaste tablets and powders don't come in plastic tubes. With the right packaging they can contribute to an 80% or more reduction in plastic waste. And that's before we get to water use. Tablets and powders are dry, not gel, meaning they use up to 70% less water in production than traditional pastes. They're lighter too, so they use far less fuel to ship, lowering C02 emissions!
