Take A Sustainability Deep Dive

Did you know that the textile industry is the 2nd largest cause of pollution after oil and gas? Enough textiles are discarded annually to fill a garbage truck every minute. Clothing production guzzles water too, an estimated 2.7 trillion liters per year, which is enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool every single day. And it's responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions, more than international flights and maritime shipping combined. A lot of this is due to fast fashion, but children grow so quickly that, to some extent all their fashion is fast.

That's why it's so important that the clothes they do wear (before they grow out of them) should be as sustainably made as possible, and ideally passed on once you're done with them.

Here are some materials you may want to keep in mind:

Organic Cotton: Swaddle you kid in cotton! Organic cotton to be specific. Compared to its conventional counterpart, organic cotton boasts a significantly lower environmental footprint. Studies show that organic cotton cultivation utilizes up to 71% less water and 62% less energy than the non-organic kind.

Organic Bamboo: Baby's love Bamboo! And you should too! It's soft, breathable, comfortable and one of the most sustainable options out there for clothing. Bamboo is fast growing and it can serve as a carbon sink. Plus, it's a lot less thirsty, taking up to 60% less water than cotton to grow. Unlike cotton it also naturally resists pests, minimizing the need for pesticides and chemicals.

Polyester: Poo-poo the Polyester. Polyester is in a lot of baby clothes and it's also the main driver of microfiber pollution. Studies suggest synthetic textiles, largely polyester, contribute between 16% and 35% of global microplastic pollution entering the oceans. It's also a plastic derived from petroleum that can contain harmful chemicals like BPA or phthalates. These chemicals might even leach onto your kids skin, and no one wants that!

Remember, eco-friendly habits start early!
