Take A Sustainability Deep Dive
Plastic menstrual products generate more than 200,000 tons of waste per year and they can take hundreds of years to decompose. And they're often made with a lot of toxic chemicals. But the good news is, you don't have to use them!
Here's a look at some alternative options:
(Organic) Cotton Liners and Pads: Compared to its conventional counterpart, organic cotton boasts a significantly lower environmental footprint. Studies show that organic cotton cultivation utilizes up to 71% less water and 62% less energy than the non-organic kind. And organic or not, it's a great alternative to plastic!
Bamboo Liners and Pads: Renewable bamboo grows quickly and requires less water than traditional materials like cotton. It can even serve as a carbon sink! Plus, unlike traditional disposable pads which can take hundreds of years to decompose in landfills, bamboo liners and pads are biodegradable and typically break down in a matter of months.
Menstrual Cups: A single menstrual cup can be used for several years. Compare that to all the waste you generate by changing out pads. It's a huge difference.
Period Underwear: Period underwear is specially designed underwear with absorbent layers that trap menstrual flow. Offering a comfortable and leakproof experience, period underwear can be worn and washed like regular underwear, eliminating the need for disposable products.
